Welcome back!
I am delighted to have the opportunity to teach Literature and Language Arts to the Queen of Apostles Middle School students this year. I am looking forward to sharing my passion for the English language and literature.
One of my professors in college often quoted a definition of literature as “a long journey in pursuit of the human heart and mind”. The great works of literature really do teach us what it means to be human! In the stories of heroes and villains, of saints and of sinners that have come down to us through the ages, we find that they faced the same struggles and triumphs that we face today. Moreover, through the experiences related in literature, we come to a deeper understanding of the great ideas that have formed our cultures and, in particular, our Western civilization. Therefore, we will be reading books like The Little Prince, The Phantom Tollbooth, A Wrinkle in Time, The Christmas Carol, and Across Five Aprils. It is my hope that our literature class will foster or inspire a lifelong love of reading.
We will also be developing our expression of ideas through the proper use of the English language: a strong foundation in spelling, vocabulary, and grammar is essential if the student is to express his ideas clearly and compellingly. We will be writing essays, research papers, and creative stories so that we can communicate our ideas and our experiences.
I’m looking forward to a fantastic year of reading and writing. Enjoy the journey!
